Right. We’re nearly ready for the off. Andrew Miller
and George Binoy are my two colleagues at Trent Bridge. Dale Steyn’s opening
and it’ll be Ravi Bopara to face the first ball. What an atmosphere

Anthem watch (Eng) This is rousing. Mascarenhas
looks confused; Foster and Key proud. Broad’s mouth is moving, but I’m not
hearing much come out - but Luke Wright, well, he’s on fire with a very
noisy and smiley effort, while Collingwood - frowning, nodding head with
serious intent - ices their cake with a strong effort. 8/10

Anthem watch (SA) Several players adopting the
Americanised signal of patriotism (right hand on heart). All pretty quiet -
but wait, Boucher and de Villiers are pulling it out of the bag here.
There’s Botha - good volume from the lanky spinner, and Smith is
understandably belting it out, but Kallis lets the side down with an
emphatically muted rendition. 7/10 and the crowd applaud.

Few questions about the wicket. Well, it’s a screamer.
New Zealand just belted nearly 200 on it, as Sri Lanka did yesterday, so
runs aplenty, I’d wager. Very much looking forward to Steyn versus Bopara…

Perfect conditions out there - breezy but warm enough,
with blue skies. The scene is emphatically set, ladies and gents. Anthem
time coming shortly. I’ve been keeping a close watch on the participants,
and the Irish have really shone in the anthems. Good tone, confident volume
- outstanding leadership from Porterfield. We’ll see how England and South
Africa fare shortly. My money’s on the hosts to produce a scintillating
rendition.

England’s women have restricted India to 112 for 8 from
their 20 overs. Should be a walk in the park for England.

If you’ve anything interesting to say, wherever you
might be reading from, you’re welcome to scribble a note to us.

Smith would have batted, he said. His team is also
unchanged, as we expected. South Africa have impressed in this tournament;
they look as relaxed as I can remember for years, and the weight of the
favourites tag doesn’t seem to be hampering them. Yet, at any rate.

Toss news: Smith calls tails, and it’s a head.
England will bat with an unchanged team. Pietersen’s fine to play and
Collingwood seems chock-full of cheer today.

Adil Rashid’s warming up in the middle. Will he play?
He would in my team.

We came across an interesting venture earlier today
called the Wisden City Cup, a scheme to promote inner-city cricket. All
sorts of prizes on offer, including the chance to train with Middlesex.
Check out their site if you’re up for the challenge.

My winning colleagues, Andrew McGlashan and Jayaditya
Gupta, are available for your questions in our frankly very entertaining
live discussion at the moment. Do join in and swamp them accordingly.
Incidentally, if you’re at all confused by how the Super Eights work, you’d
be wise to read our How The Super Eights Work piece.

4.55pm Good afternoon, cricket fans, and welcome
to Cricinfo’s coverage of the second match of the day. Will Luke here, and
we have a corker on our hands - England versus South Africa. Toss and team
news shortly, along with a maelstrom of a preamble to while away the last
hour of your working day.

0.1

Steyn to Bopara, 2 runs, down the leg side and flicked
to fine leg with a cheery roar from the crowd

And a decent crowd it is, too. "In-ger-land" roars out

0.2

Steyn to Bopara, no run, wide of the off stump and
ignored

0.3

Steyn to Bopara, 1 leg bye, Bopara takes a step outside
leg to try and unsettle Steyn, and it’s a leg-side delivery which is worked
off the pads for a crowd-pleasing single

Very, very partisan crowd here

0.4

Steyn to Wright, 1 run, fast, spicy delivery but well
played by Wright, dropping it down past gully and they run a sharp and
well-judged single

0.5

Steyn to Bopara, no run, outside off - no swing really
from Steyn, and Bopara leaves alone

0.6

Steyn to Bopara, OUT,
bowled him! A much slower delivery, an off-cutter, wide of the off stump at
which Bopara threw his hands, and the inside edge knocked over his off peg.
Gone!

impressed us so far this tournament, to bowl

1.1

Parnell to Wright, no run, crashed out to the off side.
Good timing, poor placement

1.2

Parnell to Wright, no run, a huge, massive appeal for a
catch behind. Wright flayed his hands at it, missing, and in fairness
Boucher never really went up. Nowhere near it

1.3

Parnell to Wright, no run, fuller and again Wright
attempts a thudding slap through cover but misses

1.4

Parnell to Wright, no run, excellent delivery cutting

1.5

South Africa are absolutely on fire here. An
inauspicious start by England, with two new batsmen at the crease, neither

Steyn to Shah, 1 run, angled down to third man -
wideish ball

Pietersen on strike for the first time

Steyn misfires. Or rather, he misjudges his run-up to
the booing of the crowd. Here he comes again - and he’s lost his run-up once
more! There are so many white markers on the ground, it looks like a child’s
gone mad with some crayons

2.2

Steyn to Pietersen, FOUR,
four! And what a noise from the crowd - a huge roar as Pietersen flicks it
powerfully through midwicket

2.3

Steyn to Pietersen, FOUR,
excellent ball just outside off but that’s a textbook straight drive from
Pietersen and the crowd let him know it! A tremendous roar once more to a
beautiful off-drive

2.4

Steyn to Pietersen, no run, a huge shout from Steyn -
that’s out! Is it? No! Perhaps a bit high? Good grief that’s seriously
tight! The replays suggest it was just sneaking over…

2.5

Steyn to Pietersen, no run, extravagantly left alone
outside off. Pietersen looks to Tony Hill with a big smile on his face,
expecting him to call it a wide. Hill smiles back, his hands remaining
steadfast by his side

There’s a really exciting, buzzy feel to this game that
I don’t think we’ve really felt (apart from India and Pakistan’s match at
The Oval) so far. This is electric!

outside off, watches it sail by. Good carry through to Boucher

3.2

Parnell to Pietersen, no run, crashed to cover!
Straight to cover, though

3.3

Parnell to Pietersen, no run, very good, straight
delivery banged back to the bowler who threatens to wang into Pietersen’s
skull. He keeps hold of it instead

3.4

Parnell to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen rocks forward,
then rocks back into a punchy defence. Doubtless wary of who is the
non-striker, he roars no louder than he might otherwise

"If Trent Bridge had gunwales, which - frankly - it
should, they would be rammed," Miller notes. "A smattering of white seating
still visible in the stands at mid-on, but they are clearly just queueing at
the bar."

3.5

Parnell to Pietersen, 1 run, driven to mid-on and he
sets off. Shah’s a little slow out of the blocks - natch - but they’re home

"Only one wicket in seven matches for Kallis," notes
Miller. "How unexpectedly village."

4.2

Kallis to Pietersen, FOUR,
too straight and worked off his pads with a charge down the wicket by
Pietersen - Botha makes a hash of it at fine-leg, much to the crowd’s
delight. Great, triumphant noise

Pietersen’s eyeing a massive score here

4.3

into the right hander

5.2

Morkel to Pietersen, OUT,
what a catch, what a stunner from van der Merwe! A full toss, Pietersen
tried to smash it over mid-on but couldn’t loft it and van der Merwe dived
to his left to take it aerially, almost behind him, with two hands.
Fantastic snaffle!

5.5

A dinky, mistimed, plywood-sounding donk out to cover

5.6

Morkel to Collingwood, no run, that’s better, more
power in the stroke but it’s straight to cover

That’s the lowest score after six overs that this
tournament has seen so far. Quite brilliant cricket from South Africa;
uncompromisingly accurate and aggressive. And that’s the first maiden of the
tournament, too, Andrew Miller spots.

7.3

contact down to long-off

19.2

Parnell to Broad, 2 runs, full and straight, bashed to

Parnell to Broad, FOUR,
Broad heaves this high, but how long? Smith’s dropped it on the
boundary - he leapt high, clasped it, but fell over and parried it for four

19.4

Parnell to Broad, OUT,
bowled. 87mph yorker rips out the off stump - a superb delivery. Parnell is
a serious prospect.

SCJ Broad b Parnell 9 (19m 8b 1×4 0×6) SR: 112.50

19.5

Parnell to Anderson, OUT,
gives himself room and he too is bowled - another middle-stump yorker.
Parnell wraps things up in stunning style

JM Anderson b Parnell 0 (1m 1b 0×4 0×6) SR: 0.00

An outstanding performance from South Africa. It’s hard
to think how they could have improved on this, really. So much so that I
have absolutely nothing to add, other than the fact this is England’s
lowest-ever total in Twenty20s. "England’s women managed more runs than that
today, without even losing a wicket," chirps Miller with a wry grin. I’ll be
back in 10 minutes for South Africa’s chase.

Well, who’d have thunk it, eh? South Africa, 50 from 10
overs. Well, well, well.

10.1

Still no great intent by South Africa, though the pitch
has slowed down significantly. It’s a walk in the park really. Here’s Rashid

11.1

Rashid to Kallis, SIX,
huge shot! A slow long-hop which sat out and begged to be flogged. Kallis
thusly flogged

11.2

11.3

Rashid to Gibbs, no run, tossed it up wide of the off

12.4

Mascarenhas to Gibbs, 1 run, nice thinking by
Mascarenhas, pitching it fuller

12.5

Mascarenhas to Kallis, no run, forced to cover

12.6

Mascarenhas to Kallis, 1 run, expansively driven but
only for a single

End of over 13 (7 runs)

extra cover with one hand

15.1

Broad to Kallis, 1 run, opened the face down to third
man

15.2

Broad to de Villiers, no run, Broad tries something
different, stretching out his left arm just before he reached his delivery
stride, but de Villiers works it out behind square. Bopara’s throw hits the
stumps, but, frankly, vast amounts of whatever

15.3

Broad to de Villiers, no run, a slower bouncer which
hits de Villiers in the chest

15.4

Broad to de Villiers, no run, chopped down. Foster
fields

15.5

Broad to de Villiers, 1 run, another full toss which he
forces to leg

15.6

Broad to Kallis, FOUR,
another full toss and Kallis smacks it behind square for four, bringing up
his fifty from 46 balls

His first fifty in Twenty20s. Take a bow, then win it
and let us go home

End of over 16 (6 runs)
South Africa 99/2 (13

16.5

Swann to Kallis, 1 run, worked to long-on

flighting this on middle and it squares him up

17.2

Rashid to de Villiers, 2 runs, short, wide, cut

17.3

17.6

left-hander

Well bowled young man

End of over 18 (3 runs)
South Africa 109/3 (3
runs required from 12 balls, RR: 6.05, RRR: 1.50)

JP Duminy    1* (3b)      AU Rashid    4-0-24-1
JH Kallis    53* (48b 4×4 1×6)      GP Swann    4-0-26-1

18.1

Anderson to Duminy, 1 run, tickled to fine leg

18.2

Anderson to Kallis, FOUR,
short and wide, Kallis crashes it for four behind square

And there’s the win. A thumping for England by a team
surely heading towards the final of this tournament. Their run-chase may
have lacked the pizazz we were expecting, but such was the slow nature of
the pitch that they just milked the singles. Outstanding bowling and
fielding crushed England for 111, and although the hosts were tight in the
field, they had so little to defend. Well, that’s about it from us. Don’t
forget to check out the bulletin and, of course, we’ll be back for more
tomorrow. Join us then.
